Design Technology

In our rapidly changing world, it is increasingly important that we furnish children with the critical thinking and practical skills necessary for solving problems and responding to challenges. Design technology enables children to think independently and to find practical solutions to problems as they arise. Through focused, skills-based activities and more open-ended tasks, the children learn to design, make, evaluate and modify products, using appropriate tools and techniques. Each class will usually undertake two design technology projects per year, covering the main areas of construction materials, electronics and textiles. In addition to this, our Young Entrepreneurs’ Project gives the children in Year 6 an opportunity to hone their design and marketing skills in ‘the real world’.

Food and Nutrition is taught to all year groups as a discreet subject in small groups by a specialist teacher and former head of Betty’s Cookery School. (see Cookery)

“Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works.”
