Sport & Physical Education

at Moorfield School

Sport is woven throughout the school week.

With opportunities readily available to all, children enjoy the chance to participate, compete and represent Moorfield from an early age, developing confidence every time they step onto a pitch or court.

“From swimming in Reception to weekly fixtures from Year 3, we give children an exceptional breadth of sporting opportunities — and, in a small school, everyone gets to take part.”

James Snook, Director of PE

Sport at Moorfield is taught by our Director of PE, James Snook, and gives pupils the chance to experience a broad range of sports from an early age.

In the younger years, pupils develop fundamental skills in movement, balance and coordination through team games, target games and gymnastics.

As they progress through the school, this develops into a structured programme of hockey, football, tag rugby, netball, cricket, tennis and athletics.

From Year 3, pupils take part in regular fixtures against other schools, with matches and tournaments throughout the year. Our small class sizes mean every pupil can play, compete and represent Moorfield.

Excellent facilities

Our all-weather sports pitch means outdoor games lessons and fixtures can take place throughout the year. Our large indoor sports hall is used for gymnastics, dance and indoor games.

We also use facilities at Ben Rhydding Sports Club and have close links with Ben Rhydding Hockey Club and Ben Rhydding Cricket Club. Ilkley Town Football Club provides access to larger pitches and facilities for tournaments, festivals and fixtures when needed.

Ilkley Moor is on our doorstep and provides the setting for cross-country running. Pupils run up to 5km during weekly extra-curricular sessions and compete in the Wharfedale Cross-Country League, with six Saturday races across the season.

Swimming from Early Years

Swimming starts in Reception, with weekly lessons at Ilkley Swimming Pool continuing through Years 1 and 2. In Years 3 to 6, pupils have a weekly swimming block each half term, taught by specialist swimming teachers.

Pupils also take part in the annual House Swimming Gala.

Fixtures and competition

From Year 3 onwards, pupils take part in a strong programme of weekly fixtures against other schools, including friendly matches and tournaments in hockey, football, tag rugby, netball, cricket, tennis and athletics.

There are plenty of opportunities to compete within school too, with inter-House matches, athletics events and our annual Sports Day at Ben Rhydding Cricket Club.

Sports clubs

Sport continues beyond the school day through seasonal clubs including football, netball, running and fitness. Cross-country takes pupils onto Ilkley Moor, while the wider programme gives children the opportunity to develop their skills and take part in the sports they enjoy.

Autumn 2026 Sports Fixtures

Sport plays a major part in the curricular and extracurricular life at Moorfield and is considered an important part of our educational philosophy for the development of the whole individual.
