Creative Arts
Art
Art gives pupils the perfect setting to be creative and imaginative. They learn to
communicate their ideas and feelings through various mediums. Through the study of
various artists and designers they learn to appreciate different styles. It teaches them
to be thoughtful, to prize the aesthetic and to be practical in their approach. Art is
taught as a specialist subject in Senior 5 and Senior 6.
Dance
Ballet and Jazz classes are offered as an extra-curricular subject on a weekly basis. A
dance specialist runs 6 week courses for the Senior girls to choose from as an
after-school activity. The Northern Ballet Theatre Dance company runs a couple of
workshops on an annual basis as a talent-spotting exercise. Many girls were asked to go
for further auditions this year and two have been chosen to train with the company.
Drama
There are many opportunities for drama and performance at Moorfield. Three drama
productions a year enable every pupil in school to act in a play. The Lower School
Nativity play is performed by girls in Form 1 and F2. F3 and F4 pupils produce their
own play enabling them to be creative and innovative with script-writing, costumes and
programme designs. The annual school play uses pupils at the top of the school in
Senior 5 and Senior 6. Everyone has a part and, even though the emphasis is on
enjoyment in production, the standard is very high and the show is greatly appreciated
by audiences each night.
The annual Poetry Recital Competition gives every pupil from F1 the opportunity to recite
a poem by heart to an audience. The inter-house final draws on the top performers from
each class. Moorfield regularly takes part in the Speaking, Reading and Poetry Classes
at the Wharfedale Festival.
Class assemblies give pupils further opportunity to develop their confidence at speaking
to an audience.
