About Eco-Schools
Moorfield School is leading the way for schools in the Wharfe Valley. We achieved the
prestigious green flag in 2008 and it was renewed in 2011. We have also just been awarded
the Woodland Trust’s Gold Award.
Eco-Schools is run internationally by the Foundation For Environmental Education. It is
a programme which promotes environmental awareness within schools and links to many
curriculum subjects. The Eco-Schools committee has representatives from every Form.
The girls meet weekly and report back to the rest of the school. Initiatives are planned
to cover nine key topic areas: Water, Energy, Biodiversity, Waste, Global Perspectives,
Litter, School Grounds and Transport.
By the time pupils leave Moorfield School they will fully understand the meaning of the
words ‘sustainability’ and ‘biodiversity’ and they will appreciate the part they need to
play in caring for their environment.
Alan Titchmarsh paid a visit to Moorfield School to find out what we had achieved as an
Eco-School. It was a fabulous occasion for all of us, Alan included. He was so impressed
by our achievements. It was good to see that he is as passionate about encouraging children
to take an active part in making environmental decisions as we are.
“The work you are doing is so important and I am glad that it is
received with such excitement and enjoyment by the children. When I see the sort of things
you have achieved, and how receptive and enthusiastic the children are, it reminds me why
I do the job I do.” ~ Alan Titchmarsh
