Foundation Curriculum

The curriculum offered to children in Nursery is based on the Curriculum Guidelines to meet the Early Learning Goals. Our activities are therefore based on the following six areas of Learning.

  • Personal, social and emotional development. Your child will learn to be self-confident, take an interest in things, know what their own needs are, tell the difference between right and wrong, be able to dress and undress.
  • Communication, language and literacy. Your daughter will learn to talk confidently and clearly, enjoying stories, songs and poems, hearing and saying sounds and linking them to the alphabet. They will read some familiar words, use a pencil with confidence and be encouraged to mark make.
  • Mathematical development. Girls will develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. They will become comfortable with numbers and ideas such as heavier than or bigger. They will be aware of shapes and space.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world. Your daughter will explore and find out about the world around them. They will be encouraged to ask questions about why things happen and how things work. They will build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for. They will find out about past events in their lives and their families' lives. There will be opportunities to find out about different cultures and beliefs.
  • Physical development. The girls will learn to move confidently, controlling their body and handling equipment. They will be encouraged to develop their fine and gross motor skills as well as their awareness of themselves, others and the space around them.
  • Creative development. Your daughter will explore colours and shapes, trying out all kinds of different dance, making things, telling stories and making music. As well as singing on a daily basis.

The activities are structured and differentiated so that they are meaningful. The children are learning, developing, making progress and above all having fun!

We try to encourage children in the Foundation Stage to be independent learners, making their own choices and decisions as well as being responsible for the equipment and materials which they use.

We feel that through our play based curriculum our children can try out new ideas, practise and consolidate new knowledge and skills in a safe context. This approach to learning ensures children are actively involved, engaged and motivated.
